Maureen FitzSimons, better known as Maureen O'Hara in America, was an exceptional child. But for a young Irish girl surrounded with gifted parents and extended family, these qualities were natural. Maureen made her entrance into the sanctity of family on the 17th of August 1920, at Ranelagh (a suburb of Dublin), Ireland. Marguerita Lilburn fitzSimons' mother was a contralto. Charles FitzSimons ran a Dublin firm, as well as owned shares in the Irish Shamrock Rovers, a soccer team. Maureen FitzSimons was second from a family of six FitzSimons. Her ability to perform was the perfect match for her interest in sports. It was evident by her winning pretty much every Feis award for drama and performances in the theater that her nation offered. When she turned 14, she was accepted by the Abbey Theater accepted her and permitted her to pursue her passion for classical theatre and opera singing.
